Chinese New Year starts February 16th & 2018 is the Year of the Dog: fairness, equality, integrity & honesty are what the year is supposed to bring. Let’s hope. If you’ve not been to a Chinese New Year celebration I urge you to find one to attend. Or if that’s not your thing then host a celebration of your own & here are 6 Chinese New Year recipes to try…
To kick off the festivities, start with Shrimp & Water Chestnut Wontons
& Mushroom & Water Chestnut Lettuce Wraps. Called sang choy bao in Australia, these filled lettuce cups are always quite anticipated (by me) when I go home & head out to a Chinese restaurant. I absolutely love them. Usually filled with chicken or pork, this is my vegetarian version.
For mains, you have to try one or two stir-fries. Chicken, Snow Pea & Cashew Stir-fry is a classic.
And Cantonese Black Bean Shrimp is one of my absolute faves.
Ginger Honey Anise Pork Stir-fry is one of the most popular recipes on Fresh Hunger’s website. Flavored with star anise, honey, sherry & soy, it’s simple to make. I hope it becomes a favorite of yours too.
Of course you can’t have stir-fries without perfectly cooked steamed jasmine rice to serve. This recipe & directions will have you cooking it perfectly every time.
When I lived in Canada I used to attend large Chinese New Year celebrations with 12 course dinners, Chinese opera (you’ll need to consume vast amounts of alcoholic beverages for that), followed by dragon dances, fire crackers & lots more booze. Whatever you do, I hope the year of the dog is kind to you. Cheers for now, Lovoni xo.
